Bradford City Away 1986 (Odsal Top)
Not so long after Birmingham away and the Bradford City fire disaster where many of innocent people lost there lives and a sad time in football, Leeds were away to Bradford City on Bradford Northerns Rugby ground used as a temporary measure, this fixture had disaster written all over it, but for apart from the chip van getting set on fire (what in my eyes was bad taste) there boys were well up for it before, during and after the game got abandoned, fights broke out all day long up and down Manchester Road and inside Odsal Top, Ointment lads were outnumbered on there own patch, here are a few of my memories in pictures

Bradford City Away 1986 (Odsal Top)
Excellent post and pictures, i remember that day like it was yesterday !! i dont think that chip van was set on fire on purpose, i believe from the storys i have heard afterwards it was a complete accident, still i wouldnt of liked to be a City fan that day or a fireman recieving the call to that emergency.....respects

All I remember is the police lost complete control of the situation as soon as the early trains arrived at the City's Interchange, most of us were ushered on to buses at around 10.30am and unescorted up Manchester Road, uknown to the old bill there lads (City Oinment) were in a a few pubs up there, "The Craven Hafer" being one of them, as soon as they were spotted buses were made to stop and everyone piled out of the buses and Leeds steamed in to there lads, it was toe to toe without any police all the way up to 'Odsal Top' in the underground subways on the roundabout adjascent was fucking brilliant, those memories will never leave me.

We were sat on top of the fucker at one point. I do believe it was due to everyone rocking it that the chip fat overspilled and that was the cause of it setting alight. I remember clear as day the big boom and the cheers when them gas bottles went up.
I can also remember the firemen getting bricked when they arrived at the back of the stands (well grassy hill)

Thats correct we were in the seats at the side of the standing Leeds fans, these seats were newly installed and in a poor manner, as i remember for the first time there was a hoolie van complete with telescopic camera fitted on top circling the running track around the perimeter of the away end, it wasn't long before someone learned how to dismantle the nuts and bolts off the seats and the hoolie van was getting a hail of all sorts of missiles raining down on it including bottles bricks and seats, this way before KO and the fuse was lit for a riot.

Remember getting service train mobbed with lads from every post code from the city and was nt it the first game we could pay on the gate think around £4.50 got to to interchange and trashed there specials (buses) got to the ground after plenty of action on that manchester rd on and of the buses then stood below the chip van but before remember bcfc chanting wheres your famouse service crew within 5 minuates to my left where bcfc where stood there stand opened up like a zip and must have been a team of leeds running down the banking in there end then it kicked off chip van etc on the pitch running over to there end backing them up there own stand remember them throwing missiles but backing of up there own stand also outside some kid on a motorbike going down rd getting kicked off. Laughing

Remember gettin to there shit-ole ov a ground an not been able to get in think it was all ticket but went thinkin they'd let us pay in as about 100 or so other lads did.Anyway 2 mounted old bill (1 ov em been Barraclough) told us to go back to interchange as we weren't gonna get in,so about half left, the 50 or so ov us left headed in the opp direction up Midland Rd as some City were shoutin shit from up there,as we got nearer the city lot did one apart from 5 or so which took abit ov n hiding which left one ov em K.O'd on floor after been attack by a traffic cone wieldin leeds lad.Barraclough n partner then rounded all ov us up n said the lad was in a bad way n we was all nicked even thou he seen there was only 5 or so lads guilty. There was 56 ov us charged at bratfud bridewell n me been only 14 had to wait for my partents to bail me BUT they wasnt gonna miss there Sat night out so left me till Sun afternoon (wounded). We had a 5 day trial but knew we were gonna get stitched as the older lads had been up wk before n most got guiltys, as it goes outta 12 juveniles only 2 got guiltys only coz they caved in givin there evidence. One day thou after a dinner break some lads came in gallery but someone complained to there brief n the lads got threw out, apparently these lads were ointment tryin to get our addresses prob to pay us a visit as word was goin about they'd done this when older lads had been up,city lads stayed in buildin givin us eyes n shit so wyp ended up escortin us all to interchange after each day, gettin a police escort with my mother,i'd had rather taken my chances...

Oh my god what fairy land books have you lot been reading? Odsal was indeed a great day, Anyone can split a group of scarfers and from what I've heard over the years from other firms that's all leeds could split. I'll always remember the lemmings climbing the fence into our stand (Ointment were always in the seats) that day, they dropped down one by one & dissapeared under a pile of boots just as quickly. Sure scum have always had a good number up for it but the majority were hangers on just wanting to be part of the crowd. Ointment however never had hangers on, every lad that stood with us.......... stood.

I can't remember who we were playing at Leeds Rd one day, but scum were home to Huddersfield so straight after the game we were onto the train straight back to leeds. Huddersfield were already on the train sat on the platform doing nothing more than gob off from the windows while we steamed into a group of scum who ran over the tracks to get away from us. Huddersfield well outnumbered us but they would'nt even get off the train!

Away trips were good back then, virtually every train we got changed at leeds who generally played at home if we were away & yet our biggest challenge of the day was actually catching hold of any leeds before they bolted it out of the station!

Another trip around the same period was by minibus to Millwall. There was only 12-13 of us as we pulled into a service station jam packed with scum. The minibus even had "Canterbury estate community bus, Bradford" on the side (a small point overlooked by the driver when told to get transport so we get into Surray Quays without attracting OB). Again we were vastly outnumbered by scum in the service station but not one of you was up for it!

Funniest memory of VP in '87 was all the scum fans who went on the kop, every single one of them left en mass by the gates at the front & walked down the pitch to the Bradford End, a mob of easily 200 lads & yet you weren't even prepared to make yourselves known to us at the back & you were gone before we had chance to react!

Sevice Crew?????????? Don't make me laugh! You got a rep by having large numbers only but anyone who went toe to toe with leeds tells the same story, bottle merchants!

I'm in my 40's now so have grown up a bit, I'll spend the CC match on a North Sea oilrig which is probably a good job because different rules apply to leeds & I'd prob get nicked again.

City til I die, I'd rather be a copper than from leeds!
